Picture from 1974 of the Charles Street Jail at 251 Charles Street. Built in 1851 it was a “model of new prison design”. Over the years Malcolm X, James Michael Curley, Sacco & Vanzetti and World War II prisoners of war stayed here. It closed in 1990, was bought by Mass General Hospital and developed into a luxury 300 room hotel with Carpenter & Co. of Cambridge.
