State of Massachusetts ranked first in the U.S. for LEED-certified building space per capita in 2024, moving up from third place in 2023. The state achieved 4.95 square feet of LEED-certified space per person, surpassing State of Illinois and New York. The ranking, issued by the U.S. Green Building Council, recognizes energy-efficient and sustainable buildings.
Key Massachusetts projects contributing to this achievement include WS Development’s One Boston Wharf, Gillette Stadium, a citizenM hotels hotel in Boston, and 300 Third Ave. in Waltham. In Illinois, a Penske Truck Leasing facility earned LEED Gold certification, while New York saw new certifications at SUNY Buffalo, Hudson Commons – New York, and SWAROVSKI’s Manhattan flagship store. Washington, D.C., had the highest LEED-certified square footage per capita but was excluded from the rankings.
